NEW SERIES 1

SERIES I (2016)

This series references how costume is adopted by the African Diaspora. The traditional West African textiles I have encountered inspire my designs and helps to weave a cultural narrative into my work. Each figure reflects the characteristics of a styled West African woman!

These artworks are also a response to fashion imagery, seen at exhibitions, fashion shows and editorials. I looked at fashion designers that are visionaries of their craft – using clothes as a form of expression and studied how fashion models use body language to sell clothes to consumers. These collages reference western clothing in traditional Wax Print.

I was keen to explore dance in relation to textiles as a theme; how human beings occupy space while in motion and the shapes they create. I looked into the relationship between costume and dance – in particular the movement of fabric whilst in motion and how costume influences the dancer’s routine. Contemporary dance, ballet and performance art inspired this series.
